Building a Donor Pool for Thalassemia Patients At the Day Care Centre

It is always better that thalassemia patients are given the best matched blood. In order for this to happen an extended group testing must be carried out.

In order to build the infrastructure for such a set up Sankalp has initiated a program to build a donor pool for thalassemia patients who recieve treatment at the organization's Day Care Centre @IGICH, Bangalore. In thus regard efforts are being made to register donors who will specifically donate for these patients every 3 months. Therefore every child will have a pool of 3 -5 blood donors. This will assure formation of less anti bodies and improve the chance of having a much controlled treatment and transfussion procedure for them.

As a first step in this direction, a registration program was held 28th April 2012, at a sports event for corporate organized by Youth for Seva. This event was held at Bosch sports complex, Bangalore. A total of more than 200 peeople attended the event and 41 agreed to join ands with us to help the Thalassemia kids. These people were specifically told that we could be pooling them for children with Thalassemia. Though we used Donor registration forms, they were not told that they would be called for emergencies. Also, they were told that we would assign them for to a kid and they would require to come every 6 months to donate. Incidently, on that very afternoon there was need for donors at IGICH for 3 thalassemia patients. Two donors from this pool willingly oblidged and donated blood the next day.

Sankalp wishes to thank the organisers and the 41 individuals who pledged their support to Give Life A Better Chance.
