  • April came and went away so soon. Sankalp was moving steadily ahead with all then plans that had been laid out for this work period. It was a time of realization and work. Good thing to happen was that the Project plans did actually take shape, the targets became closer and April brought in loads of cheers and work to our little organization.

    • BMTC as life saviours:

Next time you are travelling by a BMTC Bus, you are very likely to see the life saving mantra - "Looking for Blood - Dial 080-1062 (in Karnataka)". You are very likely to see college students keenly tying red bands around their arms proclaiming to be a Life Saver. Not to forget the Brand New PCs which are coming their way. People from all parts of town are helping the city battle with teh summer shortage by organizing camps. read more to know it all :)

    • Vijaya Karnataka - Call Sankalp for Blood:
It is impossible to move around the city in search of blood with the existing traffic congestion. Even though the details of the blood banks are available, it is very difficult to know if the required blood group is available in the required number of units. By the time all these details are estimated in each and every blood bank, there are chances of risking the patient's life uring an emergency. To sort out these problems, a joint initiative of Sankalp India Foundation and Comprehensive Trauma Consortium introduce a centralised blood helpline number (080) 1062. It is an information centre which provides the blood availability information via a single number throughout the city.
    • Introducing two new websites from Sankalp:
While the world is busy with its own things, Sankalp volunteers are busy in their own way. This time, by designing two new websites (Blood de India and Team red) having specific roles. Blood de India, is a website, which aims to have all the donors all over the country access one site for anything related to blood donation. Team red, is another site for all volunteers from all organizations and institutions, where the blood donation drive occurs, to have a common platform for discussions of the same and other related issues. Both the websites are still under development. Details will soon be given :)

but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

    • It only takes a second:

A few days ago I got a call from my old college mate whom I haven't seen for a very long time. The topic, which was about all the good old times that we had and about his recent graduation, changed to a touching story when he started talking about his father.<!--break-->

His father's declining health made him to stay at the hospital. Because of his illness, his father suffered from imsomnia and often talking to himself. My friend, who had not been able to sleep for a few days as he had to keep watch of his father's condition, became irritated and told his father to keep silence and try to get some sleep. His father said that he really wanted to sleep well because he was very tired and told my friend to leave him alone in the hospital if he did not want to keep him company.

    • BDO: Busy Bees:
A busy phase, for all blood related volunteers, has begun. Following the start of semester in February, increased enthusiasm, better plans and works have been taken. Issues like drawbacks of previous semester and other problems were discussed along with their solutions and improvements. All volunteers will be given blood requests cases, including freshers who will get a good exposure this way. This requires the volunteers to be prepared all the time to take up cases and also balance with other things too, like studies. Everybody is to keep themselves updated on various issues regarding blood donation. Our website will soon be filtered of in-referenced and ambiguous reports.
    • Sankalp : A Big Picture:

Many of the Volunteers, particularly freshers and the Chennai Volunteers, knew of Sankalp but did not have the entire big picture. So this Sunday meeting was conducted, when the Chennai Volunteers came to Bangalore. As our Guest for the day, we had a person from MindTree, Mr. Abraham Moses (Head of Administration). The day started by giving the introduction about all the Sankalp branches (Rakta Kranti, Project Tiranga, CTC Disha, BDO and Financial Department) and activities handled. This included the past activities, present ones and the planned ones for future.
    • March 2008: Blood Donation Camps and CTC Disha Publicity Running Full Steam:
Rakta Kranti is the Sankalp way of trying to bring about a change in the situation of voluntary blood donations in the city of Bangalore. In terms of tasks performed, it looks pretty straightforward on paper. It is just increasing the number of  blood donation camps. Colleges, companies, just any institution where people who want to make a change gather everyday. Putting this into reality is a challenge though. However, pushing the endeavor forward, Sankalp has a few more camps planned in the time to come. Read more to get to know where revolution is stepping in these days..

I had been working much too long on this job. I guess things could have been worse. I certainly wasn't doing hard labour. But going door to door asking questions as a representative of the federal government wasn't the most satisfying position either. It was August. It was hot. I had to wear a tie.

      'I'm not interested! Good bye!'

You can't imagine how many times I heard that. I finally caught on and began with.

    • Do you feel that the Union Budget for 2008 is good for the overall interest of the country?:

The recent Union Budget for our Nation was full of sops almost for everyone. A person finds it hard to understand how the government is planning to bring the money back to government coffers which it is planning to spend so generously. All of us agree that it is anothre poll gimick. But, in an overall context, do you think such budgets are good for the country.

We would love to see you comment in your opinion once you have voted!

      Republic Day

Its was 6:30 in the morning, when most of the other were enjoying the sleep of National Holiday, Sankalp volunteer were busy to get ready to catch the bus. They were full of enthusiasm and energy to go out and celebrate our National Festival. As they do every year to spread the love and patriotism around.

This year, on the Republic Day, they decided to go with MindTree, one of the highly social responsible companies, with their TSA (Technical for Social Activity) team to visit a Sri Lankan Refugee School by the name of IGIA (Indira Gandhi Institute Academy). MindTree is supporting this organization from around last 8 year. It was a nice experience for all volunteer to interact with children and new people. We could not visit the old age home as we had to move to our next destination i.e. the Azadi Express.

      Food for the soul

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain the fluids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

      Sankalp Volunteer Feedbacks

The growth of an organization depends upon the people who are leading them. We at Sankalp benchmark all our people on the following five parameters to be able to mark and measure the strengths and weakness of our people and to track the growth of the organization. There five parameters are responsiveness, teamwork, leadership, initiative and delivery. Recently we completed a comprehensive feedback survey where all the volunteers got a change to evaluate the senior volunteers who lead them.

Here are the results of the first formal Sankalp 'Senior Volunteer' Performance Evaluation Process.

    • Joining in of New Volunteers:

There is a special reason for excitement and enthusiasm in Sankalp Volunteers in the month of October. Bright young people, who have the implacable desire to make this world a better place join the organization and begin to carve their way for a revolution.

The co-operation and support of the Principal of MSRIT Dr Rajanikanth, ensures that each year we reach out to the first year people in a big way. The permissions were in and the stage was set. There were posters being made, strategies to visit classes were being drafted and energy was being pumped in to ensure that each first year at lest gets to know about the organization. The class talks that pour Volunteers went forward with gave us a good 250 new blood donors ready to take on the challenge.

    • What makes a good leader?:

The quest to find that magic potion that makes a perfect leader brought us t the idea of putting up a poll on sankalpindia.net. 9 traits of leaders were chosen from Harvard Business Review and we set up a poll that was to unravel what people want in their leaders.

The results were amazing. We got a one sided response to the poll with 52% respondents asking for Vision as the single most important leadership quality. Next followed Passion which received 12% of the votes.

8% respondents felt that the most important leadership trait were Judgement and the same percentage opted for  Integrity and Knowledge. Creativity, Honesty, Charisma and good communication lost the race and were scarcely opted choices.

One of the respondents replied -"A leader is incomplete without any one of this quality." Read more comments by visiting the poll.
