July 2009: Keep walking :)

Sankalp India Foundation places highest importance to the safety and well being of all our donors. In order to raise the bar on the quality standards and the procedures adopted to keep our donors safe Sankalp has initiated a “Blood Donation Reaction Study”. This study will comprise of recording of all donation reactions which occur in our drives. This is an effort to understand and work towards making our blood drives safer and better for the donors.

In the guidance of Dr Sundar P from the NIMHANS Blood Bank, the study will be carried out in all the blood donation drives that Sankalp organises. In order to make sure that this study is as scientific as possible we have taken the standards for recording the donation reaction from International Society for Blood Transfusion. ISBT had constituted “Working Group on Complications Related to Blood Donation” to come up with Standard for Surveillance of Complications Related to Blood Donation. The intention of this standard is to present an internationally accepted description of the complications, including severity and imputability grades.

After collecting sufficient samples we will carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the inputs in order to understand the possible ways to bring down donor reactions. This is yet another step in making blood donation a happy experience.

Rakta Kranti Colleges

Rakta Kranti Colleges is setting the stage on fire this monsoon. The Team is focussed towards getting more colleges to organise blood donation drives. Having seen that the design of the programme was appreciated by the 17 colleges who we involved in the 1st phase of the programme decision had been taken to extend the programme to Mysore. In the last fortnight we got great results from Mysore too. Several colleges who were never organising drives before have expressed their keenness to participate in our programme.

Due to the ongoing vacation period not many drives can be organised immediately. We are spending this time to do the group work in several districts of the state. In August when the colleges reopen we hope to see a series of drives happening in the colleges outside Bangalore. Once the ice is broken and they have organised one drive, we will encourage them to schedule the future drives to match with the shortage periods.

CTC Disha

With the stocks of blood at an all time low and the dengue fever on the prowl, the significance and the value added by Disha to blood search has sky-rocketed. The call center is getting calls round the clock from small and large hospitals alike. The extremely low stocks in individual blood banks is pushing the availability of certain groups down to only a few units across the city. Single point of blood search is therefore saving the day for many patients.

Infra-structurally, efforts are on to modernise and yet economically optimise the call centre. New Telecom backbone has been put in place to ensure better Quality of Service.

Emergency Team

Dengue is the work spelling urgency and demand in the emergency team. There is a sudden upsurge in the number of people requiring platelets. Each dengue patient can take tens of units of platelets to recover. There are others who choose platelet apheresis as a better alternative. Either way the city is unable to meet the demand effectively. The consequence is an upsurge in the number of emergency requests pouring in. We are in desperate need for more platelets donors.
