Starting with Chandra Gupta Maurya, Karnataka was ruled by Kadambas, Gangas, Ashoka and others till the ---AD. The state was distributed among two are more kings, never in history the state was ruled by a single king. Out of many kings Vijayanagara Kingdom ruled for two centuries. Other prominent kingdom were Hoysalas and Chalukyas. Mysore was under Wodeyers first latter taken over by Hyder Ali and his son Tippu Sultan. After Tippu Mysore came under the control of Wodeyers. Vijayanagara Kingdom was prosperous and they built temple at Hampi their capital. Hoysalas encouraged fine arts and were famous for sculptures, architecture and temples. Amara Shilpi Jakkanachari was the famous architect. Shakuntala was another to be remembered as the great dancer in their period. 52ft Gommateshwara statue at Shravanabelagola, cave temples of Ajanta, Yellora, Ihole, Pattadakallu, cave temples also reflects the cultural heritage of Karnataka. Like Kabir Das, Sur Das Karnataka was socially reformed by Kanaka Das, Purandar Das, Akkamaha Devi, and Basavanna. Kittur Rani Chennamma, Tippu, Sangolli Rayanna were few Freedom fighters against the British East India Company. Karnatic music is one of the two famous musics in India. Yakshagana, Dollukunita are the folk dances.The staple food in South is Ragi ball, Rotti ( bajra, maize, sajje) in north, rice and fish in coastal Karnataka. Other than Kannada Tulu, Konkni are also spoken in coastal region.
