Blood donation drive at MSRIT

MSRMBDS:

The second blood donation drive for MSRMBDS was held on saturday (4/10/08). The response was good and 26 units were collected (against the permitted 20units). The permitted number of units was less this time, because of the annual blood donation drive being organised next month in MSRIT.

The number of people registered were 33 but 7 people were deferred making the final count to be 26 units. There were no instances of fainting. Only one girl felt a little giddy after donation, but soon felt fine.

Emergency Wing:

There were 12 blood requests in the previous week (28th sept to 5th oct) but no donations made from Sankalp side. Of the 12 requests, half of them, that is, 6 requests were for A -ve. It also included 2 out-station cases, one from Mumbai and the other from Andhra Pradesh.

Also, there was one Apheresis request for A -ve from Mallya Hospital. In Apheresis, the rhesus factor does not matter. So, the volunteers asked them to look for A +ve Apheresis donor and thus found the donor.

One of the out-station request was from Puttaparthy, Andhra Pradesh. The patient had a hole in his heart and had to undergo surgery. The surgery required 5 units of A -ve blood. The volunteers are co-ordinating from Bangalore with the patient's relatives in AP, by talking in Tamil fluently. Addresses of a few nearby colleges was given to the patient relatives. The found a donor in one of the colleges. Another donor was contacted from our donor database and made to donate. The request is still not satisfied and is being worked on by the volunteers till date.
