Sometimes, Emergency team has to undergo difficult tests and the night of 16 December was one such night which had in store a difficult situation for the team.
A six day old baby girl born in one of the government hospitals in the city and who was yet to be named, had just stepped into this world and was suffering from acute jaundice. Her bilirubin level was just 21. To add to the worry, little baby’s blood group was ‘O’ negative; not the most rare blood group but unfortunately it was not available in any blood bank in the city that night.
The emergency wing got the call at around midnight .Seeing the criticality of the situation, the team was on its toes. The volunteers personally started calling the blood banks but the luck was not on their side. They spoke to the treating doctor but unfortunately the doctor was not in a situation to wait until morning. The only way out was to find a blood donor and get a donation right away. It was not a simple task to search for donor at 1:00 AM in the night. But this time the stars were with the emergency team; they were able to a find a donor within few minutes.
Then the team came across a new hurdle. None of the blood banks in the city was ready to draw blood at night. Even if one or two were ready, they wouldn’t have issue blood before following afternoon as the blood had to be tested and processes and the next batch testing and processing would have started in the morning only. At this point one of the blood bank officers came to the rescue. Though he was far off in US but he managed to coordinate with the blood bank in Bangalore. Within no time the donor who appeared as guardian angel for the little life donated blood. Blood bank treated this as special case and went out of the way to test the blood unit immediately.
Finally at around 2 am in the morning, the father of the infant girl collected blood from the blood bank and rushed back to save her life.
The volunteers walked back with a smile and joy in their heart; one more life saved, one more test cleared!!!
