India or Bharat

Submitted by brij_agrwl on

India and Bharat.. the two names our country.. its an old discussion..

I don't mind if our country is called by two names in two different language..

Obviously "Bharat" is the older name.. and english name "India" came very late.. We may co-related "India" with "Indus" or "Indoi" or "Sindhu". but is there a solid document why and how we got this name. I did not find one...

Or its the fact that Britishers gave us the name... and its related to "Adiwasi" as being called in USA like "West-Indian", "Red-Indian", "American-Indian".

I am confused and concerned if Britishers gave us this name.

Just thought of using our own name Bharat in our daily communications with Bharatiay ppl at least.. what you guys say..

Hello,

Glad to see a post from you.

Sharing my take on the issue, did you notice that our Government does not have a single name to refer to the country? For instance

- in Hindi: Bharat Sarkar (never India Sarkaar)

- in English: Government of India (never Government of Bharat)

Whatever be the origin of the names, I guess I have accepted both of them. I am as happy to call myself an Indian as a Bharatiya. and in fact, with change in language, I intuitively switch between the two :)

Though, I think India came from Indus, and this has been evolving since a very long time now, the reason why other people are referred as Indians (Red Indians and West Indians) is different. India was famous for it's prosperity and for it's gold. Europeans had it on their wish list to reach  India and make the best for themselves. When Columbus started for India, actually he lost the way and reached for what is called America today. And there, they found people who they thought were Indians. The skin tone and the location added the Red and the West phrazes to the common references and graduually this became common language.. So, Adivasis and Indians - I see no connect.

In any case, if they have named us Adivasis and still they are willing to accept the present day situation when they are keen to stand by Adivasis in all spheres of living, I am happy if they call us Adivasis and remind themselves of their stupidity and mis interpretation. This however, is just in case the meaning was as such.

Beside, the biggest risk that such discussions pose is the notice of the Media and our Netas. If some keen 'find the news' reporter from India TV or Aajtak get's to read this discussion, tomorrow you may have a headline saying "IT Industry Ne Uthaya Desh Ke Naam Ko Sahee Karne Ka Beda". Last thing we really want is to give them an opprtunity to deviate from more pressing needs of the Nation today.

Cheers,

Rajat

Yes, agree that we have accepted both the names..

good to learn about the other Indians.. hehe..

agree with your views.. about the news channels and the stupidity of english ppl..
