Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ullhasnagar, Rajahmundry, Faridabad and Dehradun - in last few months Sankalp India Foundation together with Cure2Children has offered free HLA typing to children suffering from thalassemia who have a healthy sibling. More than 250 families have been offered HLA typing. A fourth of these are likely to find a perfectly matched sibling. The journey towards cure has started for children for children in each of these cities.
It's probably for the very first time that the families are being offered HLA typing at their doorsteps. It's probably for the first time that there is no financial barrier in order to pursue the option of cure. It is probably for the first time that such a vast network of organisations involved in thalassemia management are working with each other to streamline the delivery of care.
The seeds of hope that we sow are germinating fast now. More and more thalassemia support groups are beginning to ask questions about the option of cure.
While the ball has started rolling, lot remains to be done. We need to achieve a situation where every child who has the potential of getting cured from thalassemia in a reasonably safe way must be made aware of the choice. We are all geared up and ready to deliver upon the promise of “giving life a better chance” for all children suffering from thalassemia!
We share some of the feedback we received from the thalassemia support groups we collaborated with.
“We sincerely appreciate and acknowledge Sankalp India Foundation's support to the activities of Mahavir International, Jain Seva Samithi and Goutami Eye Institute towards the welfare of children with Thalassemia. We thank you for the volunteering to do HLA typing on 47 children and their family members on 21st November 2015 at Rajahmundry. We thank the entire team and supporters of Sankalp India Foundation for volunteering to do HLA typing at free of cost to the children and their families.”
