Although born and raised in Chennapatna, the town of toys, Syed Fahim’s childhood was not a joyous one. His life was different form the other little kids he met in school. Every month, he had to travel to Bangalore – 60 kilometers away from home – for a pint of blood, the only thing his body couldn’t produce. During the rest of his time, he had to juggle between studies and failing health.
Fahim was born in 2011. His mother Samren recalls how seven months after Fahim’s birth, he suffered heavily from cough, cold, and fever. Their local doctor referred him to St. John’s hospital in Bangalore. It was here they realized that the hemoglobin level in Fahim’s blood was fast receding. Further tests concluded that he was suffering from thalassemia.
From then until recently, Fahim traveled every month to Bangalore and receive blood transfusion. Samren tells us that Fahim’s father is a lorry driver and spends most time on the road. Yet, they did everything they could to ensure Fahim received blood transfusions every month. Fahim went to school diligently, and turned out to be a fast learner. Samren was probably not sure though if Fahim would ever be able to bear the fruits of his taleem.
Samren recalls the day in June, 2014, when she brought her son to Samraksha. Fahim was soon identified for Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), the cure for Thalassemia. To add to her joy, Fahim was a full match with his younger brother Ashir.
Fahim underwent Bone Marrow Transplant on 6th of August 2015. Samren’s mother stayed with her grandson through the process. He came out perfectly fine, and is currently undergoing follow ups at Samraksha. Fahim has missed school for about a year now, but will soon be meeting his little friends back in school again, this time without the fear of loosing them.
Syed Fahim celebrates his fifth birthday this February. We wish him a long and healthy life.
