One of the unique characteristics of Sankalp is the fact that all volunteers are not from the medical community. Stumped? Almost all of the 30 volunteers who work on various aspects in the filed of blood are engineers!. Somehow even though the self learning curve is pretty high amongst the volunteers, there will be those strange topics which will still linger as why what and how.
What if an expert in the field of transfusion medicine answered these queries and shared his knowledge and experience? You ask the volunteers and they will say that it will be a great opportunity. And that was what precisely happened.
Dr Sundar, a leading transfusion specialist in the country and the blood bank officer @ National Institute Of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) agreed to impart his knowledge to a group of engineers!. An informative 3 hour session on complex topics of blood kept volunteers grilled to the board. The training session was held at NIMHANS blood bank
Cross transfusion of blood (Transfusion of blood of a different blood group at times of critical emergency, the medical reasons for different combination, the hassles and the solutions were all discussed. Dr Sundar gave example from real life and also gave details on how and when things started. Volunteers were just amazed at certain facts. Adding to this were topics like GVHD (Graft Versus Host Disease), Leuko reduction, Blood components, cryoprecipitate, FFP (Fresh Frozen Plasma), transportation of blood between cities were also discussed in detail. For once in many many Sankalp gathering the volunteers were silently listening for so long. Some made detailed notes, many volunteers asked questions and made sure that they used the opportunity well and got to learn some newer things. For many volunteers these topics were a welcome change from their engineering texts that they have been reading for long. One volunteer, Ritesh, who is currently in his final year of engineering, exclaimed that this was the first lecture in 4 years where he has listened for so long with full concentration. It was surely a joy being there!.
