More than 1000 units of blood units being made available for thalassemia patients each month
Last month we cross the 1000 mark for the number of blood units being transfused to patients suffering from thalassemia across the state of Karnataka. We must congratulate Rashtrotthana Blood Bank- Bangalore, Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health-Bangalore and K L E Society Hospital and Medical Research Centre Blood bank for ensuring continued supply of safe and voluntarily donated blood for each of our patients completely free of cost.

Rakta Kranti: The Blood Revolution
A total of 7 drives were organised. 453 units of blood were collected. 15 donors had an adverse reaction which is about 3.3% of total donations. The deferral rate was 10.65%.

Sustained efforts through the winter weeks of December saw a few blood donation drives materialize in the month of January 2016. Plenty of small blood donation drives in apartments and malls were organized right through the month.

Organizing blood donation drives in December has always been a challenge given the fact that most individuals, corporates, students are all on vacations or prefer to spend time at home with families in order to come back afresh for the upcoming new year. Unfortunately the Chennai floods had it’s impact on blood donation drives in Bangalore as well.

Thalassemia management November was a challenging month at Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health. Thanks to the 10 government holidays, we had tough time accommodating all the children for transfusions. Looking at the workload at the institute together with the institute we are in the process of getting a doctor exclusively for the thalassemia unit. We had a total of 238 patient visits with 304 transfusions. The turnaround time for blood was 3.5 hours and the average patient stay was 7.3 hours.

Rakta Kranti Updates
Sankalp organized 12 blood donation camps in Sept 2015 collecting 772 units of blood. Syniverse: 3rd camp was organized in Syniverse on 2nd Sept. The company promoted the event very well and arranged fruits for the donors. We saw 87 people turning up for the event with a collection of 75 units of blood. Schnieder Electric: Schnieder Electric organized a camp with Sankalp for the first time at their Bidarahalli location. For publicity, all the LCD screens in company were used.

Rakta Kranti
Dengue continued to be the biggest challenge to deal with for all teams at Sankalp. For Rakta Kranti, it was to maintain a steady supply of blood in the city. The plan was to have atleast 15-20 blood donation drives in this period. However, in total 13 blood donation drives were organized by the team leading to a collection of 1078 units of blood.

Rakta Kranti's tryst with summer shortage
Continuing with the momentum built up in May to organize more blood donation drives in the summer months, we had 19 blood donation drives in June 2015 leading to a collection of 2143 units.

Rakta Kranti As expected, the month of May was hard on blood banks with fading blood stocks. This meant that the demand for camps was more and hence the RK wing of Sankalp was busy in planning and getting in more drives. As many as 19 blood donation drives were organised through the month bringing in some relief in the difficult period. 1609 units of blood were collected in these camps.
