Remembering Vijay Kumar

Vijay Kumar as a part of the team during the cordon and search operation in Anantnag on 1st April 2008.

When the company commander’s quick reaction team was searching the suspected house, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire upon them. When the terrorist tried to break contact, RFN Vijay kumar alongwith Major Swaraj maneuvered tactically and engaged the terrorists. RFN Vijay kumar in an extraordinary act of courage and valour closed in at close range and shot dead one terrorist. In this act Vijay sustained Gun shot wound on right side of chest, was critically injured, succumbed to his injury and gave the supreme sacrifice of his life. Vijay displayed unprecedented Valour, presence of mind and exemplary courage under intense terrorist fire in engaging and elimination of one terrorist.

For displaying most conspicuous gallantry and indomitable courage in the highest traditions of Indian Army, Rifleman Vijay Kumar was awarded Sena Medal (posthumous).
