Safe Diwali campaign

Submitted by Lisha on

The Sankalp volunteers were given the 1st opportunity and we grabbed it with enthusiasm. We were divided nt 6 groups, asked to pick up our schools of choice and speak to the students about safety tips during Diwali festival.

The underlying plans of all the groups were to first convince the Principal of our small but genuine effort and secondly to communicate our ideas effectively to the children of various age groups from I to X standards. We got our permission and then we addressed the students, either as an assembled group or class-wise.These sessions were interactive and interesting to both us and children.

We did not face much difficulties except for these.Time constraint, that is we felt a shortage for planning our execution. Also we had to cope with clashes in our college and the school timings so some of us went there leaving our classes. But mostly it was during free hours or saturdays. Some teams did not get permission from some Principals to speak to the students. So we felt a little let down. But we had the advantage of speaking to available and keen students and had set out at a proper time that is a week before Diwali,so that at least some students can follow what we said in the upcoming festival time. And we could clarify a few misconceptions. Like Rajatha told, "a girl stood up and said she'd apply kerosene to medicate burns". Also majority of them wanted to apply oils as well, which we advice not to do so.

We had taken up this job so that we can do our duty to society,or contribute to a better world around us,or to learn. But after doing this task,we realised there is always a scope for improvement, and also are happy to have been able to do it.It has made us look forward to take up more work.

Conclusion???Did we succeed?Have we created complete awareness?Maybe not,but if a few people follow what we said and radiate out more awareness them we will be satisfied that we have succeeded(to some extent).

The new first year volunteers of Sankalp executed the “Safe Diwali Campaign” in the city. The new volunteers were completely un-prepared for this job when it was assigned to them. In front of them lay a Herculean task of spreading awareness about fire safety during Diwali among school children. They were given no further advice or help. At the end of the programme the senior volunteers were happy to see the amazing work the Volunteers had done. In teams of 2-4 people, they had approached up to 4 schools to spread the work. It was their first step towards active participation to make the society a better place. With their sincerity and hard work, they are a promising lot ready to join in the revolution.
