March 2008: Rakta Kranti-Colleges and more

RK Colleges:

Volunteers approached a class of students of Sapthagiri College, and found a few volunteers in the college to spread the awareness about the blood scene in the city. These students in turn took a great initiative and took the message to all other classes. Posters were put up on Monday and the week that followed was the “Blood Awareness Week”.

A skit was performed on Saturday, carrying the message about voluntary blood donation and also aiming at breaking some of the myths about blood donation, and to motivate the students. After the skit, a “Question and Answer” session was arranged, where the Volunteers answered the questions the students asked. A college Professor, who had donated about 20times in his lifetime, motivated the students too. He still showed interest to donate this time, during the camp, but had to be deferred due to age factor (62 years now).

The Camp has been postponed to 20th March. The number of students who registered is about 350. This camp will mark the start of Rakta Kranti-Colleges after about one year of efforts.

MSRMBDS:

The regular small-scale camp for MSRMBDS was organized on Friday (21/2/08). The camp was organized between 10.30am and 1.00pm. There were 5 volunteers and 2 of them were freshers. Three classes were approached and 25 units were colleted. The donors who turned up was 28, and 3 of them had to be deferred in order to maintain donor safety.

All the preliminary check-ups were done and donor’s safety was the highest priority. The camp was held in a classroom, due to unavailability of the Auditorium. The available space was efficiently utilized for the registration section, pre-donation briefing area, donation area and post-donation areas. The donors were given a certificate from the Blood bank.

CTC Disha:

Phase 0 of CTC Disha publicity has been completed, by visiting 13 Government Hospitals in the city, spreading the message “Looking for Blood, Call 080-1062”. Also the volunteers have obtained permission to put up about 6 stickers in all the 5000 buses that ply around Bangalore.

The next plan is to seeking Media partners among Radio stations and Newspapers. And a few Private Hospitals will be visited to spread the awareness about this centralized blood help line number.

The volunteers will also prepare videos to be shown at various places like railway stations, functions and such gatherings where we will get permission.

BDO:

The BDO Emergency wing has generally been considered to take up blood requests and solve them. But this is not the entire picture. The Volunteers were informed about the various other areas where they can work.

The Volunteers have also been updating the BDO section with related information. Some Volunteers work on the regular posts for the monthly newsletter. Also research on the possible adverse effects of blood donation is taken up this week. During the regular meetings a presentation on blood donation was given and discussed upon. The filling of various forms (case report form, general interaction form, feedback form) was also discussed for further easier references.

The Google map of Blood bank has now been completed and will soon be available. The map for Hospitals is being worked upon. There were two cases this week, which got solved by sending mails.
