Annual Training and Networking Event for Thalassemia Prevention Coordinators: A Step Forward in Strengthening the Mission

In the final quarter of 2024, thalassemia prevention coordinators across India gathered for a series of annual training sessions that served as both a learning opportunity and a team-building experience. These events not only allowed participants to enhance their skills but also offered a platform for individuals to connect, collaborate, and strengthen their networks.

The sessions were crucial in helping coordinators better understand their organization, refine their counseling skills, and bridge gaps in communication. One of the most significant takeaways from these events was the chance to interact with peers, share experiences, and resolve any misunderstandings, leaving attendees feeling motivated and equipped for the challenges ahead.

Maharashtra Training: Building Confidence and Connection

The first of the training sessions took place in Nagpur on September 21-22, 2024, for the 22 Maharashtra coordinators at Akola. Several new members attended the session and, though initially reserved, quickly gained confidence as the event progressed. By the end of the training, the coordinators had formed meaningful connections with their colleagues, which was instrumental in strengthening the team's cohesion. The interactive nature of the training was a highlight, particularly the role-play exercises, which enabled coordinators to share their insights, discuss challenges, and practice their counseling skills.

Madhya Pradesh Training: Aligning Objectives and Strengthening Bonds

On October 26-27, 2024, 24 prevention coordinators from Madhya Pradesh gathered in Indore for a two-day training session. This event was especially valuable for the new coordinators, as it allowed them to align on shared goals and address issues that had previously caused confusion. The session proved to be a turning point for the team, as participants were able to clarify their understanding of thalassemia prevention and received answers to lingering questions. A visit to the BMT unit at MY Hospital, along with interactions with families, reinforced the emotional impact of their work and instilled a renewed sense of purpose.

Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka Training: Sharpening Skills and Strengthening Connections

Finally, on November 15-16, 2024, 4 center coordinators from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka gathered in Bangalore for their own training session. This group was already highly skilled and experienced, but the training provided an excellent opportunity for them to fine-tune their counseling techniques. By meeting fellow coordinators and interacting with patients and families, the team gained deeper insights into the challenges they work to prevent. The session also included meetings with management center coordinators, further strengthening the collaboration between different teams.

Gujarat Training: Bridging Gaps and Building Empathy

The next training session, attended by coordinators from 13 centres, held in Ahmedabad on November 30-31, 2024, focused on the prevention coordinators in Gujarat. The event was an eye-opener for many, as it clarified several gaps in understanding and provided much-needed clarity. The coordinators, many of whom were meeting each other for the first time, left the session feeling better connected and more confident in their roles.

A particularly impactful part of the training was a visit to the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit and the Ahmedabad Day Care Centre, where the teams interacted with families receiving treatment for thalassemia. This face-to-face interaction deepened the coordinators' empathy and reinforced the importance of their work. Additionally, meeting thalassemia management coordinators from the region fostered a sense of collaboration and helped strengthen the bridges between the two teams.

Renewed Energy and Commitment

In the days following these training sessions, there has been a noticeable surge in energy and commitment among the coordinators. The connections made, skills honed, and the experiences shared during these sessions have rejuvenated the teams and reaffirmed their dedication to thalassemia prevention.

As the year ends, the teams are more united and equipped than ever to take on the mission of thalassemia prevention, ensuring that the work continues to have a lasting and meaningful impact on the lives of families across India.
