June 2010: Sankalp moves ahead on the right track

With most of the Sankalp volunteers on vacation due to semester end holidays, only a handful of volunteers are involved in various Sankalp activities. Here is a snapshot of what happened in Sankalp over the last few days

Disaster Mitigation and Management Group

The Disaster Mitigation and Management Wing has a good and a bad news to share. Starting with the bad one - the volunteers are on vacation and the remaining ones are loaded with sufficient work to push the disaster preparedness to a back seat. The situation is expected to change only after Independence Day. The Good news is that Sankalp's Disaster Relief Partner Program has taken off and we are in discussion with several organisations to join in.

Project Tiranga

Independence Day 2010 will be an occasion for a special workshop on disaster preparedness. After a long gap when volunteers meet for the Independence Day get together, we will attempt to fill the gaps in operational readiness for disaster response.

Sankalp Tech

Work at Sankalp Tech has been rather low key in the last one month. This is mainly because of greater focus on consolidation and strengthening of the existing infrastructure than on expansion. We added new hardware to our server taking the total RAM to 640MB. Now the site performances are very good and we are gradually adding features that consume greater resources till we reach the critical load. From a user perspective, if you visit blogs on www.sankalpindia.net you are likely to see a lot of blog related links on the right side of the screen. Similar thing happens in case of forums, news and updates. Gradually we will be making the content on site highly contextual so that browsing is easier and better that ever before

CTC Disha

Disha is undergoing through a phase of stabilization. With many new blood banks added to the list, the total number of blood banks is close to 50. Only 3 districts remain to be networked as yet. Volunteers are in constant touch with blood banks to resolve their issues and integrate them into the helpline. For the record, in the last 1 month, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Chitradurga districts are covered by the helpline. Tumkur will be integrated shortly. There is a plan to put in some new resources at the call center. Slowly but surely, issues at the call center are being resolved to offer best quality of service to people

Rakta Kranti Karnataka

With the new semester just starting, it's best if we try and make colleges realise the importance and need for voluntary blood donation. That's what we are upto in Rakta Kranti Karnataka. Volunteers are in touch with colleges across the state thanks to the enormous ground covered in the year that went by. This is leading to some results as well. In the coming days we have plans to hold team red trainings/drives in Kolar, Davangere, Belgaum, Raichur to name a few.

This apart the RKK volunteers are also working in sync with the Emergency Wing to build a statewide repository of voluntary blood donors. A new chapter has been added in the services provided by Sankalp India Foundation in Hubli-Dharwad. The district which is already well networked with our Statewide Helpline for Blood and which also hosted one of our blood donation drives, now also boasts of an Emergency Blood Donor Database. P C Jabin College and Sankalp India Foundation got together to secure hope for the patients in need of blood by putting together an emergency database of 221 donors on 28th July, 2010.

Mr Hiremath, the Principal of P C Jabin Science College was very supportive of the program. He gave the responsibility of maintaining the database to Mr Prabhakaran who is the Director of Physical Education and also the in-charge of the NSS wing in the college. Mr Prabhakaran worked tirelessly all day to ensure that the message of Emergency Blood Donation reaches all the students. Sankalp Volunteer was very appreciative of the help he gave. The college already organised blood donation drives on National Festivals. Sankalp has assured all help and co-operation to make the future blood donation drives safer, better and more informative for the students of the college.
