The other day I had visitors who had come to one of our day care facilities. For last few years the children - siblings - both thalassemia majors - were being treated at a relatively resource crunched facility. Chelation was barely given and transfusions were given only when they could not be avoided further.
Sankalp is committed to the cause of ensuring no one dies due to lack of blood. We follow high standards of quality monitoring. We realized that we were receiving unusually high no of repeated blood requests from a ward in a Govt. Hospital. Additionally, the patients for whom blood was required were also the same.
As we crossed the milestone of 50,000 units of blood collected in our blood donation drives, it's the occasion of celebration of the spirit of voluntary blood donation.

While voluntary blood donation camps are improving in terms of their adherence to national and global standards are concerned, a major area which continues to remain neglected is that of donor counselling. Most blood banks do not have a trained counsellor to attend the drives and even those who take up the responsibility lack the necessary focus and skill. It was early January 2014 when Bangalore was undergoing severe shortage of blood. Even the most common groups like A+ and B+ were out of stock. The reason being the holiday season, when most of the colleges were off and companies were having fewer drives.
