Narayana Nethralaya

They have established Dr.Rajkumar Eye Bank with the sole purpose of disseminating the importance of eye donation and to facilitate in the collection, processing and distribution of eyes to the needy i.e., to help the corneal blind people. Eyes need to be donated within 6 hours following death. All one has to do is to call up the eye bank at the earliest, following death. The eye bank has necessary arrangements to collect the eyes so donated.

Facts about eye donation

Cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye and is the focusing element of the eye. Injuries, infections, diseases, malnutrition, congenital disorders, chemical burns and post-operative factors are the main causes of corneal blindness. Sight restoration is possible with corneal transplant. Anyone of any age can donate eyes, even those who have undergone cataract surgery, wear spectacles, are hypertensive, suffer from diabetics, asthma or tuberculosis. Eyes are never removed from a living person.

How far are medical professional aware about blood transfusion?

Submitted by rajat on

Sankalp Volunteers often get to meet doctors while solving blood cases. We often get to hear what the doctors told the patient about arranging for blood.
Please discuss here your experiences in this regard. Share the responses the doctors gave you (or gave someone else).
This forum is not meant to undermine or dis-respect anyone. The sole purpose of this is to make the donor community aware about prevalent problems and misconceptions.

Apheresis Machine

The above is an apheresis machine in which the apheresis process is done.the whole process of apheresis takes about 2 hours......but tell you what it's much simpler and easier than blood donation.A component of blood is taken from your body and the rest of the blood is sent back to you again.Immediately the component which is taken out is given to the patient.....so.....time for blood components separation which is done in normal blood donation is saved.......

Apheresis

In the diagram below, the process is illustrated. Whole blood is introduced into a chamber that is spinning, and the blood separates into components (P = plasma; PRP = platelet rich plasma; WBC = leukocytes; RBC = red blood cells) by gravity along the wall of the chamber. The component to be removed can be selected by moving the level of the aspiration device at the right. In this example, plasma is being removed.

Types of Donation

Living Donation Some organs and tissues can be donated by living people. A healthy body easily replaces blood, blood platelets, and bone marrow, so they can be donated more than once. A person can donate a single kidney or part of the liver while alive. The remaining kidney can provide some of the function of the donated kidney, and the liver grows back (regenerates) to its original size in a few weeks. It is also possible to donate part of one lung, part of the pancreas, or part of the intestine, although these organs do not regenerate.
