Bhopal Gas Tragedy
3rd December 1984 Shortly after midnight poison gas leaked from a factory in Bhopal, India, owned by the Union Carbide Corporation. There was no warning, none of the plant's safety systems were working. In the city people were sleeping. They woke in darkness to the sound of screams with the gases burning their eyes, noses and mouths. They began retching and coughing up froth streaked with blood. Whole neighbourhoods fled in panic, some were trampled, others convulsed and fell dead. People lost control of their bowels and bladders as they ran. Within hours thousands of dead bodies lay in the streets.

Few day back one of my collogues in MindTree had a fatal accident on river side. After enquiry what came out was that this fatal incidence could be prevented if he was aware of danger around. It was due to lack of information on the river side which led the incidence.

Nobody disputes that, during his lifetime, JRD Tata was the most respected — and probably the most admired — businessman in India . Ratan has finally inherited JRD's title. He is clearly the most respected and admired businessman in India today.
Think back to that phase, 10 years ago, when the Tatas struggled to reinvent themselves in the post-JRD era. Ratan was perceived then: awkward, untalented, unworthy of the job, out of his depth and full of vindictive anger against many of the satraps of the JRD regime.
It was a time of change.
