Jasper, diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at age 1, faced regular blood transfusions and frequent hospitalizations due to severe pain crises. In September 2023, a perfect match was found with his sibling, Mercu Makungu. The family had initially approached DKMS, Germany for help, and they entrusted our Bangalore centre with the opportunity to cure Jasper.
Pre-Transplant Preparations
The family arrived in Bangalore on February 17th, 2024, and by early March, initial counseling and pre-transplant tests were completed. Mercy, initially apprehensive about donating bone marrow, found reassurance through discussions with other donor families and decided to help her brother.
The Transplant Journey
On March 13th, 2024, the formal consent process began, and the BMT was completed on April 22nd, 2024. Jasper’s recovery showed positive signs with engraftment occurring by Day +15. Despite a CMV reactivation, it was promptly treated, preventing complications. By May 10th, 2024, Jasper was discharged from the BMT unit.
Post-Transplant Recovery
Jasper’s recovery continued to be monitored with regular follow-ups. Around Day +33, signs of dropping blood counts raised concerns, and his immune suppression was increased. By September 2024, Jasper showed stable chimerism, indicating good progress, and the team began weaning off his immune suppression medication.
A Joyful Return Home
By November 2024, Jasper’s health was stable, and he was ready to return home after extensive post-transplant reviews. With minimal immune suppression, Jasper was free from the daily struggles of Sickle Cell Disease. The family eagerly anticipated his return, marking a new chapter in their lives, as Jasper celebrated his 12th birthday and many more happy milestones ahead.
