April 2008: Rakta Kranti and CTC Disha

Rakta Kranti:

(a) Colleges: The Blood Awareness Week held at Sapthagiri college led the institution to organizing a fabulous blood donation drive. The camp in Sapthagiri College was held on 20th March. There were two Blood banks and the number of units collected were around 275 units. With this the Team Red in Sapthagiri College becomes the first to taken an organization through teh complete cycle of awareness-education- motivation and then donation.

CTC Disha Publicity Phase 0 completed

The phase 0 of CTC Disha has been completed. 13 govt hospitals visited. The volunteers being primarily engg students had only saturdays to effectively spread the information to the hospitals.


Already the calls from these hospitals for blood have started to come. Two of these hospitals have agreed to participate by sharing their blood stocks. All this happened in just 2 weeks!

After about a year since Rakta Kranti-colleges was started, there was a breakthrough this week through Sapthagiri College. The volunteers put forth the message of blood to the students throughout the week, which was the "Blood Awareness Week". Please share your experinces about this week.

Should a donor be promised blood for free in case of need?

 

Time and again a debate about this promise of free blood to the patient and his/her primary relatives pops up in the blood donor community. The issue arises from the incentive that few blood banks in the country give in the form of a time bound assurance to provide blood free of cost to the person who donates blood and his/her primary relatives.

March 2008: Blood Donation Camps and CTC Disha Publicity Running Full Steam

(a)Colleges: There is a blood donation camp in Sapthagiri College of Engineering on 15th March. There will be a week called “Blood Awareness Week”, where the students will be made aware of the Blood scenario. Then, at the end of the week, the camp will be organized. On the same day, the Volunteers will perform a skit with a strong message about 100% voluntary blood donation.

I came to Calcutta a day after a bandh was called and will be leaving a day after a bandh was called to protest against the Nandigram issue. Lot of people have been asking me what's wrong with Calcutta and the reason for which the general public and business is being affected. Is it an extended Diwali vacation??
